The Farmhouse in Rosignano Marittimo
“You can walk beside and grow together, even traveling on different roads.”
(Susanna Tamaro)
A manor house from the early 16th century around which, over the next five centuries, a thriving farming community has gradually developed. In the past, the road that leads to the farmhouse was called “road of relief”, and the town has inherited a name which contains the stories of all the agricultural merchants who, over hundreds of years, stopped there in order to rest and take refreshment during their long journeys.

Territorial Context
Rosignano Marittimo
Rosignano Marittimo is immersed in the soft Livorno hills, at the northern end of the Alta Maremma, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. A village with a long history and an ancient medieval tradition, as can be appreciated by visiting the most ancient areas, such as the castle and the stronghold.
The name probably came from the Roman baptismal name “Rasinius“. Here during the Middle Ages there were several domains of Della Gherardesca family; belonged to Pisa from the tenth century, Rosignano very soon hosted a castle, which later became the seat of the florentine Podestà. Thereafter, Rosignano Marittimo became a hunting estate of the Medici, then it was part of the Capitanato of Livorno.
Perhaps, the most important years for Rosignano were the Ten of the twentieth century. The Belgian Ernest Solvay, an industrialist, entrepreneur, politician and philanthropist, had started the industrially production of sodium bicarbonate from an early age. In Rosignano Marittimo tourism and soda industry are the first budget items.
Rosignano Marittimo, with the town of Castiglioncello and the White Beaches, is a very popular destination throughout the year. In summer various manifestations and events are held to liven up the life of the town.
Among the annual events, the Castiglioncello Festival Inequilibrio Festival stand out, with both national and international dance events and the big show in August choreographed by Micha Wan Hoche. An important event is also the Castiglioncello-Costa degli Etruschi Literary Prize with a literary and a philosophical section, hosted in the Pasquini Castle respectively in September and February.
In Località Polveroni, in Vada, the Vada sull’Aia festival takes place in June. It is an excellent opportunity to taste the dishes of the typical Tuscan gastronomy, which here merge with the marine products of the catch. The frog legs are instead protagonists of the Sagra del Ranocchio. Another period in which Rosignano Marittimo is very lively arrives during the holidays between April 25th and May 1st, when the most popular green lung of the city, Monte Pelato or Poggio Pelato, is populated by people who follow its itineraries and paths; there is no lack even of off-road vehicle rallies.
A curiosity: the intrusive igneous rock called gabbro all over the world takes its name from the fraction of Rosignano, particularly rich in this type of rock in the ophiolitic successions.
Territorial Context
The Camaiano Cultural Park
The farmhouse is part of this Cultural Park established in 2016.
The aim of the “Camaiano Cultural Park” project is to concretely highlight the hilly territory of the Gabbro, Castelnuovo della Misericordia and Nibbiaia hamlets of the Municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, so beautiful from a landscape point of view and rich in history, and to promote local products , hiking, catering, events and accommodation facilities.
Territorial Context
The sea
The nearest seaside resorts are Castiglioncello and Rosignano Solvay.
Castiglioncello: An ancient Etruscan village, Castiglioncello towers over a small promontory which is the last Livorno mountains offshoot. Tourist resort of international prestige, by some people charmingly renamed “pearl of the Tyrrhenian“, Castiglioncello is endowed with a persistent appeal. Red cliffs overlooking the sea, sheltered bays, beaches and coves bathed by clear water, a beautiful pine forest capable of inspiring artists, painters, writers and poets, Castiglioncello knows how to welcome those who visit it.
The “whitest white”: Rosignano and its white beaches just a few minutes drive from Castiglioncello.
This is Rosignano Solvay, which takes its name from the historic Solvay factory that here has employed hundreds of people since the early 1900s.
However, in addition to the name, this company, that produces – among others – bicarbonate, left its mark in the territory also transforming the appearance of the landscape and making it completely different from the rest of Tuscany.
In fact, in the stretch of coast near Solvay the sand is so white that it feels like being in the Caribbean.
The effect is incredible: the turquoise sea foams on a soft white sand and create a contrast with the green dunes covered with vegetation.
From Livorno to Piombino, one will come across the various famous names of the following picturesque, Italian locations: Marina di Castagneto, Bibbona, Quercianella, Marina di Cecina, Baratti Bay. In these places, tourism cohabitates beautifully with the rhythms of local life and it’s not at all difficult to find well-equipped ports for pleasure boating. Furthermore, the splendid island locations of Elba, Capraia and Giglio—famous for their many kilometers of beaches and transparent waters, are easily accessible via ferry.
